James has recently performed in Perth with the West Australian Opera Company in Falstaff, and for Channel 9 Telethon in South Australia’s Mclaren Vale. in 2011 he was a presenter at the Helpmann Awards, and recipient of the Brian Stacey Award for emerging Conductors. He was part of the Opera Australia Chorus for their May production of The Mikado, released in cinemas this year, and sang with Cantilation for Sydney Symphony concerts, and a recording for the soundtrack to Happy Feet 2. In 2012, James will take up study and assistant opportunities in Germany, as part of his conducting development.
At 29 years of age, James has been a student of Robert Dawe OAM and a graduate of
the Elder Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Music (Performance). At Adelaide
University, he earned the Baggot Prize for singing, going on to study at the Sydney
Conservatorium after receiving the Vargassoff Bequest and Scholarship. He played
Ecclitico in the Australian premiere of Haydn’s opera Il Mondo Della Luna (Sydney
Conservatorium), and the role of Fabrizio Naccarelli in the Australian premiere of The
Light in the Piazza at Star City - Sydney. James toured Australia, New Zealand and
Asia for two and a half years, and 607 performances in The Phantom of the Opera,
and recently performed with Opera Australia in The Pirates of Penzance at the Sydney
Opera House, and in The Mikado for their Melbourne season.
James is also an award winning Conductor. He has musically directed productions of
Iolanthe, The Pirates of Penzance, Trial By Jury, The Gondoliers, The Sorcerer,
Camelot, Oliver and Guys and Dolls, and has collaborated with artists such as
Kamahl, Dennis Olsen and proudly the late Rae Cocking. In addition to conducting
studies with Graham Abbott, James is an alumnus of the Symphony Australia
Conductor Development Program, conducting Orchestra Victoria, The Melbourne
Symphony and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.
James performed with and assisted Jason Robert Brown at the Adelaide Cabaret
Festival, other professional credits include; Glad Rags - SA Film Corp (mini-series),
South Pacific (Sea Biscuit), Les Mamelles de Tiresias (State Opera of South Australia
Young Artist), Israel in Egypt (Intervarsity Choral Festival), Haydn’s Harmoniemesse
(Christchurch St. Lawrence, Sydney), Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings
(Ku-Ring-Gai Philharmonic Orchestra), Handel’s Messiah (S.C.U.N.A. and Sydney
Town Hall), The Perth and Adelaide Festivals of Arts and the Tanunda Town Band. He
was recently Conductor or the Choir of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Adelaide, and
regularly performs on ABC 891. James has directed productions of Guys and Dolls
and The Mikado, and has given performances at the Athe historic Basilique d’Hennebont, Brittany - France.
